Cellino responses to Web based White Leeds Radio was undoubtedly a coup, and one where Cellino was unlikely to realise the call was recorded. Whilst fans have been clamouring for news, information or statements, one individual decided to simply ring up and ask, and the answer was better than anything that could have been expected.
A broad outline of the call, if you have not had a chance to listen or read the transcript was;
- Cellino loves the fans and thinks we've been ripped off for years.
- He put a stop to early Season ticket renewals - why should the fans pay for something in February when they are not getting anything in February.
- He is not exactly fond of David Haigh and insinuated GFH are still in cahoots with Ken Bates.
- McDermott does not come out well either, nor any of the players - expect significant changes in the summer if Cellino gains control.
- Leeds United is poisoned by a load of thieves and snakes.
- McCormack wanted away in January and several other players are being massively overpaid, one to the tune of £25k per week!
As Cellino's appeal starts in London this morning, the call has won him further support across social networks but after ten years of making the headlines for all of the wrong reasons, shouldn't the fans be concerned at Cellino's views and outburst?
Being caught off guard with a fan phone call is also naive and is the second controversy he has been caught up with in as many months, the first being the deadline day sacking of McDermott. It is also easy to see just how much of an influence Cellino has had around Elland Road, and how it must be impacting on the training and matches for the squad. It isn't hard to imagine that McDermott is completely undermined around the place, and the players could be desperate for a move away or worried about their futures.
Is this what the fans really want? Outspoken, impulsive, brash, controversial, impetuous, opinionated?
Hell Yeah! Bring it on!
At the same time as Cellino was being unwittingly recorded for what has to be the most successful accidental PR stunt of the year, Mike Farnan was busy on the phone to Sky Sports News. A professional, credible and genuine interview has made 1/100th of the impact of Cellino, and whilst Farnan and the Together Leeds bid are genuine and trying to do their best for the club, and may make for a more predictable and stable future, the excitement, passion and danger associated with Cellino is all the more appealing.
So eyes turn back again to London to see the outcome of the QC led appeal to the Football League decision. The fact that the league have engaged Queens Council to rule on the appeal, demonstrates the concern over further legal action on any decision, so don't expect a response today. A need to cite precedent in similar cases may need to be referenced to ensure the verdict is as water-tight as it can be.
