Brian McDermott was understably a happy man after his charges had returned to action following the international break with an altogether more committed and convincing team performance to dismiss a very poor Birmingham side - for whom the troubles continue to mount.
The Leeds United manager was visibly relieved and clearly very satisfied after watching his skipper return to his barnstorming best and lead his rejuventaed team mates to a much needed victory in a much more intense and considtent . In typical philosophical and pragmatic form, McDermott commented “That’s the way it is in football, especially in 2013. You can make a disaster out of anything and unfortunately that’s how it seems to be but I try and live on an even keel and at Leeds United in particular we need to live on an even keel. We need to create something very good going forward because we’ve got a great club here. This was my 20th game and I’m trying to find the best way to get this group of players to work. We found it today and the manner of the victory was really, really good. It sends a message out to our dressing room about how you win and why you win".
However, the manager was also quick to recognise that one good performance does not a season make - and he warned his squad that they must not even consider resting on their laurels as they prepare for the visit to local rivals Huddersfield Town. "I always enjoy winning, and that's what we are in football for"" said McDermott " but the manner of the win was important too. We played some terrific stuff. Now that’s got to be done on a consistent basis, not just as a one-off – especially in this league.”
