As Leeds slipped to defeat against Wolves yesterday, once again, the football was almost a side show to the circus that is Leeds United. It seems impossible to believe the amount of people running our club who have made such a complete and utter mess of it. Bates then GFH showed they had absolutely no idea about this fantastic club of ours – they ran us without engaging with the fans, and got it hopelessly wrong. Now, however, we have Cellino. A man we chased out of the club as he tried to take over – with hindsight, maybe we should have kept chasing.
However, he came in with a massive opportunity to unite the club. He is clearly a very charismatic man, and, after a difficult start, started to win the fans over. Despite a couple of ridiculous managerial appointments, he talked a good game. Eland Road would be repurchased, we would invest in the youth, he’d use his contacts to bring some top Italian players in etc. We could see light at the end of a very long tunnel. Redfearn took over, and, also after a difficult start, things were looking up.. and then, as always with our club, it started to unravel. The purchase of the ground went from tomorrow, to next week, to November, to seemingly nowhere. The players he brought in were, largely, pretty poor (with a few exceptions), the McCormack money seems to have vanished into thin air, the youth players don’t seem to be getting contract extensions, and he was banned by the Football League as not fit to run the club.
Despite all this, there has been one thing that has given us all hope. Neil Redfearn and the team have, against the odds, managed to turn the season around. Redfearn has ditched a lot of the foreign players, and played the kits. Players like Taylor, Mowatt, Cook and Byram are regulars, whilst Dawson, Phillips, Walters are on the bench, or, in Phillips’ case, starting their playing career. The upturn coincided with the appointment of Steve Thompson as assistant. A man Redfearn had to fight for 8 weeks to get into place (again, appalling handled by the board). The pressure was off Redders, he could bounce ideas off someone, have someone to support him and help him – things were looking up – on the pitch at least… we could start, maybe, to look forward…
This last week though, it seems to have come crashing down. The suspension/sacking of Thompson without explanation , the Antennuci can he/can’t he play sage, the talks of splits in the dressing room…
Let’s be honest here – Cellino isn’t supposed to have anything to do with running the club, but we all know exactly who is making these decisions. Does he really think the fans are stupid enough to believe that director of football Salerno (who has supposedly walked out too) fired Thompson without any input form Cellino? Really?
I’ve had enough of the ego driven Cellino. Enough of his meddling, Enough of his BS, enough of his spin, his charm and his ideas. He needs to sell this club and move on.
You know what the frustrating thing is – it’s such a quick win. Give the kids a contract, same for Redfearn (and Thompson), butt out and let the manager manage. Cellino’s ego just won’t allow it though… I don’t crave a billionaire anymore – just want someone honest with the club at heart – is that too much to ask?
