Sir Michael Caine says he is fed up at being associated with the catchphrase ‘Not a lot of people know that’ – because he did not come up with it.
The actor is so upset that he has posted an internet message stating it was comedian Peter Sellers who kicked it off. The phrase has been attributed to Caine for about 40 years and he said it as an in-joke in the 1983 film Educating Rita.
Michael Paine, the nosey neighbour character who appeared in Harry Enfield ’s Television Programme, also uttered the words. ‘I have never said “Not Many People Know That”,’ ‘Peter Sellers said it when he impersonated my voice on his telephone answering machine. ‘His impersonation was “This is Michael Caine, Peter Sellers is out. Not many people know that.’’
He also repeated this on the Michael Parkinson show.’ The actor added: ‘I do not mind something clever being attributed to me but I do mind something stupid that I did not say or do.’
Sellers had told Parkinson in 1972 that Caine loved to quote Guinness world records and would finish off by saying: ‘Now there’s not many who people know that’.
