Very sad to hear that Paul Mariner has lost a battle with brain cancer at the tender age of 68. He was very much one of my footballing heroes in the 1980s. He was a great player, gent and role model. His was the goal that propelled England to the 1982 World Cup in Spain where he had a great tournament. He really should have been picked more often by Ron Greenwood for England. In terms of playing style, he's very reminiscent of Patrick Bamford. I can still rhyme off the names of that Ipswich side - Paul Cooper, Mick Mills, Terry Butcher, Russell Osman, George Burley, Franz Thijssen, Arnold Muhran, John Wark, Eric Gates, Alan Brazil and Mariner. I can't do the same for the league winning Villa team of 1981. Anyway, I'm glad I got to see him play. RIP Paul.
I'm the same as you Smurf and for some reason I could easily memorise the Ipswich team but not every other team.... used to love watching them play.
I don't know if they actually won the title though and don't think they did?
Mariner was a quality striker who could do everything and, unfairly, doesn't get remembered as much as others after all these years.... RIP Paul
Just read that Mick Bates has passed away. 191 appearances for the Great Leeds Side.
Scored in the Fairs Cup Final v Juventus 1971 of course. RIP Mick Bates
Didnt score many for leeds but that must be his most famous goal soopa
Sadly yet another one of the 60's/70's generation leeds united players has left us.
RIP
Didn't get the same publicity as some of our legends but a VERY important part of the squad and scored some VERY important goals.... RIP Mick
RIP Mick
Just seen this, aged 73. Spent 12 years at Elland Road. RiP.
Played more than I remembered.
RIP feller.
Rest in Peace Mick
The classic "Side before Self" man. Stayed loyal to LUFC for 12/13 years when he could have moved to another club and played more.
Just his love of LUFC and the players around him was enough.
Behind Billy and Giles so was never going to get enough of a look in but did his job when called upon.
Above and beyond, a very loyal club man.
RIP
