Leeds midfield star turned in a confident, composed and well disciplined performance for England as the national side eased past minnows, San Marino last night.
Phillips played for the full 90 minutes, playing in a holding midfield role and was not tempted to drift forward as England dominated.
Whilst others could be seen to be trying to get on the score sheet, Phillips stuck to the tasks, controlling the play from the back. He rarely gave away possession and moved the ball quickly around the pitch - a trait all too familiar to Leeds fans.
Since breaking into the National team, it has not been clear who Southgate is favouring with a wealth of talent available to the England manager, but a competent, composed and well disciplined performance from Phillips will not have done his cause any harm as thoughts start to turn towards the delayed Euro's this summer and the World Cup in 2024.
