Sothe quesgion need to to be zsk zbout the season performances from the clubs supposedly number 1 keeper. Has he been good enough, has he improved or is he regressing in his development? Is it becauze we do not have strong goalkeeping coach or was he just not our best young keeper at the club?
Personally, i believe Meliser was not our best goalkeeper atthe club going into last summer. I said at the time that I believed Elia Caprile was the better talent and had the better ceiling but since he was not a favorite in the eyes of some people he was moved on. Was Kristoffer Klaesson as good as Illan in the summer? We do not know has he never gets to play.
Now this season. Why has Robles and Klaesson no been given a chance especially with Meslier struggling so badly?
What do others think?
At fault for both goals today
Confidence shot, poor lad.
Have to agree with Dan. Under MB his distribution from feet and hand were excellent.
Full backs and wingers would bomb forward for quick throws an we could also play triangles from the back to move up the pitch.
JM changed that part of our game as he sought to go longer. Not sure if he was VO's pick or 49ers really.
Progressing.
Isn't Meslier the youngest keeper to make 100 appearances in the Prem.... I may be wrong.
He's just going through a bad patch after conceding 11 in 2 games of which NONE (🤔were TOTALLY his fault....
He's still progressing as a keeper and ALL keepers, and outfield players, go through a dodgy patch.
De Gea was on his way out last season and come back stronger and he's experienced. Pickford is always getting slated. Lloris, I think, is crap and not good enough for a team like Spurs. There will be a few more that I can't think of at the minute....
We don't want to be having a journeyman like Robles as our no1 keeps. If he came in for a few games and did really well we'd definitely lose Meslier in the summer.
He must be half decent if the alleged 30m links to Chelscum, Spuds and Mancscum are true.... and surely can only get better with his feet and hasn't gone backwards.
He also looks like Plug from the Bash Street Kids so that's good enough for me....
It don’t help Dan that we don’t have a constant back 4 I don’t think he trusts them but he can’t distribute the ball he is one footer so it goes left mostly he can’t throw far enough either
Don't think he should be dropped as he's simply the best keeper at our club.... it's the ones in front of him CONSTANTLY letting him down!
There has been a couple of goals where his positioning has been a little suspect but that should be sorted by the goalkeeping coach who watches the game back and advises and rectifies....
However, we have no height whatsoever up top or with the rigid 3 behind. Rodrigo, Sinesterra, Aaronson, Harrison, Summerville, Gnonto etc CANNOT win a header from Meslier kicking out long.... Liverpool kept pressing him to kick long and not be able to play out from the back and was easy pickings for their giant CBs against our midgets.
Robles is crap with his feet and I noticed that when I watched us in a meaningless friendly in the far reaches of Europe following my club whilst others watched from their armchairs....
No doubt that JM has a lot of qualities to become a very good goalkeeper.
He's usually very good in one on one's, dito for his shot stopping.
In terms of positioning I agree with Daniel and I feel his kicking is a bit hit & miss.
He's still young and if he can bulk up a bit, he obviously would have more of a commanding presence in dealing with high balls etc.
Like Soopa, I can' see him staying (even if we stay up).
I'm getting a sense of Deja vu here...do we all remember singing Kiko's praises early on,and then when he turned crap (or the defence was crap in front of him) he was hounded out even though he was a great shot stopper and good at saving penalties.... his positioning was poor..... I do hope Meslier doesn't suffer the same fate.... because he is still young and has a great future ahead of him,and I for one want him to grow with Leeds not get rid just because of one crap season....
Tending to agree with Glory here too. Confidence has a major impact in all sports peoples performances be it football, RU, golf, darts if your mind isnt clear and focused errors and mistakes tend to follow quickly. As a keeper we all know the saves me made which amounted to points on the board but in all fairness to IM look at whats in front of him (a bloody shambles). Personally last years IM would have saved commanded his box for the Palace equaliser had we gone in at HT that day Woy's team talk would have completely different and our heads wouldnt have dropped, we played well in the opening 45 and the belief (confidence) going out into the second half would have still been there in our players, a game we fell apart in and imploded like ive never seen before in all the years ive been watching LUFC.
I said it about a month, 6 weeks ago IM needed a spell on the bench as his confidence levels were dropping at that stage now 6 weeks later i can only imagine where his head space is. I still think a quick turn around can happen for IM once Wober comes back into the backline but until then JG needs to take that decision for the good of the player. Think back to when Kiko was floundering a spell on the bench gave IM a chance to step upto the plate (and that he certainly did), without that decision to drop KC and promote IM would we ever have seen him??
So for the Club it was the best decision take by the manager at that time so is it time for history to repeat itself and for the current manager to take a similar decision?
I still think he is a very good goalkeeper and has performed miracles between the sticks that have kept us in games. At the moment, I believe there are 2 things happening to him: a crisis of confidence (and let's be honest if you have Firpo, a mis-firing Rasmus, charging Bill and one pace Roca in front of you, who wouldn't!) and is head being turned by his agent who is looking to cash in on a big transfer.
I think if we get Wober, Cooper & Koch back as a central 3 that should steady the ship and give him the confidence to command his area, unfortunately as regards the full back areas, they will continue to be a liability.
