The ongoing Meslier debate

Illan Meslier has been Leeds United first choice goalkeeper for the past five seasons, turning out for the club in 215 times. The 24 year old was just 19 years old when he made is Leeds debut and there are few that can dispute his shot stopping abilities and the contribution he has made to the two promotions Leeds have achieved in that time.

The Frenchman has produced some outstanding saves, and earned the club a number of points across his time with Whites, whether that was to keep the score at 0-0 or prevent a last minute winner Meslier has more than played his part. For a keeper so young, it is probably true to say he has at times, exceeded the expectations that we could expect.

And then comes the errors - not a huge amount to be fair - they can be counted on one hand for the past season, but they have been crucial - and basic! With Sheffield United and Burnley pushing Leeds all the way this season, every point was critical and when your keeper costs you a few, it gets noticed.

The goalkeeping position is one that demands perfection - mistakes happen all over the pitch, week in, week out, but when it happens between the posts, it stands out, and Leeds fans are notorious for demanding perfection. Meslier probably saved us as many points as he cost us in the latest campaign, but the fans have started to lose faith, adding pressure on a (relatively) young player, just at the time he didn't need it. Farke saw this, and brought in Darlow to complete the campaign.

Speculation is rife that Meslier is on his way out at Leeds, but the truth is, no-one knows. There are replacement keepers out there, but they will cost and whilst Leeds do have money to spend, it isn't a limitless pot and finds may be better directed elsewhere in building up the overall strength of the team.

Would you want a new keeper or a 25 goal-a-season striker? A new keeper or strength in defence?

Meslier may costs us a couple of points next season, but it is fair to say he may save us a few points that others keepers might not.

Meslier?

  • He deserves a crack at the EPL again

  • Try to keep him as No.2

  • Send out on loan, but keep for the longer term

  • Sell
